Nova is young woman surviving on Earth in the year 2115. After wars and illness took all her family, she’s been alone and doing what she knows to stay alive since the age of 16. The sun is dying and the Earth is dying with it.
Kol is the leader of a party of Maji, an alien species as endangered as the humans, who are on Earth trying to gather as many willing young and healthy females they can, to rescue and incorporate them to the society on their own planet.
They’re meeting is unorthodox and, though the Maji rescue her from certain death and heal her, Nova is not one to trust anyone which is how she’s kept herself alive since her father passed away. She’ll make it hard on them, she’ll try to run away, but Kol is determined to bring the “little one” with them and maybe offer her more than a new home. Will Nova let go of her fear and open herself to the possibility of the new life the Maji are offering?
I don’t read science fiction. It’s not my thing and I picked this book as a way to open myself to yet another genre, but I was pleasantly surprised after only the first chapter.
Out of the Ashes is fun, entertaining and, at times, swoon worthy. Nova and Kol are strong and stubborn and they will clash constantly. They both rely on their instincts, he because it’s “the Maji way” and her because it’s what’s kept her alive for years after she found herself alone. I really liked them individually and as a couple and I have some real love for some of the secondary characters met on this intergalactic adventure.
The story has an easy flow, it’s full of LOL moments and I was more than impressed by the details of the spacecraft, the new planet and the customs of the Maji people. I felt more than once as if I was watching a movie rather than reading and I loved the feeling. I’d recommend this book whether you are a die-hard fan or new to sci-fi.
